1. The main focus of this Department is to
assist students and parents in:
a. Selecting an appropriate high school program, one designed for
their students’ and future goals.
b. Dealing effectively with a variety of personal issues and
helping students in their self-exploration process.
c. Offering students the opportunity to explore their future
educational goals and career paths and working individually or
in small groups to help shape appropriate post grad options.
d. Monitoring students’ progress and assisting them in developing
academic & social skills, which will enhance their high school
experience.
2. Students can learn about summer programs, post secondary
education options and scholarships through resources in our
Guidance Office.
a. Numerous catalogs and bulletins, as well as applications for
many accredited colleges and
vocational schools, are available for student use.
b. Representatives from a variety of colleges and the military set
up informative displays in the cafeteria, and students are
encouraged to seek information that will help formulate
post-secondary plans.
c. We offer a Financial Aid Night for students and their parents
each December.
d. A College Planning Night for students and their parents is held
in March.
3. Students and parents may make an appointment to meet with
counselors. Periodically, counselors or other staff members will
meet with students individually or in small groups. Often the
topics will be:
a. student issues (personal & social) c. career (and academic)
plans
b. school programs d. student’s academic progress
As a department, we feel each student is valued, and we look
forward to the opportunity to work with parents and students to
make the UHS experience productive and enjoyable.
Reminder: A student may make an appointment to see his or
her counselor through the Guidance Secretary. Should any
questions or concerns arise, parents are encouraged to call
their child’s guidance counselor @ (508) 278 - 8633.
