“Social Studies educators teach students the content knowledge, intellectual skills and civic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of citizenship in a participatory democracy.”
National Council for the Social Studies

The UHS Social Studies Department is committed to providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve academic and civic competence. At the high school level students learn to analyze the past, relate it to the present, and recognize implications for the future. The Social Studies Department stresses the importance of critical thinking by providing students with a variety of learning opportunities that involve writing, research, debate, and technology.
